Fishing is a pastime that allows you to both relax and enjoy nature simultaneously. But if you want to fish and actually catch some, you should know the equipment you need to do it properly. You may be delightfully surprised at how little equipment you actually need.

If you are new to fishing you could feel pressured into buying supplies that are not necessary. Some of the large fishing supplies shops are guilty of over-selling to beginners.

After all if you have never been fishing it is easy to buy everything you think you need. To prevent this from happening to you, below is a list of the basics that you truly need to enjoy your trip.

* Hooks. Hooks come in many sizes and shapes and they are required every time you cast out. The hook is what you place your bait on and what the fish bite to be caught. You will need a large supply of these inexpensive items as you may use and lose plenty each time you fish.

* Rigs. These are used to catch different species of fish.

* Sinkers. The purpose of a sinker is to drop the bait to the bottom of the water quickly and keep it there. Without sinkers the bait would float on top of the water rather than reaching the depth where the fish swim; you would not get any bites.

To purchase the correct sinkers you need to decide what kind of fishing you are going to be doing. There is no point in getting one that is very light if you are fishing in waters with both a strong current and depth; otherwise you will find that it drifts far too much.

* Bobbers. These are also known as floats. Floats are used to alert you when a fish is on your line and tugging it by taking the bait. Floats come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and weights. Some people like to make their own floats when they believe they can construct more effective ones. A float that is too large will warn the fish you are there; one that is too small will drift away.

* Swivels. These are used to allow your lure to turn. This prevents your line from becoming tangled. Swivels are available in multiple sizes to suit your needs.

* Personal needs. Always remember to wrap up warmly on cooler days and take some food, water, sun screen, and first aid supplies for yourself and others.

Apart from your tackle box and bait, these are pretty much all you need to begin fishing. Obviously the more advanced you become, the more you will want to add to your core equipment. However, you can add as you go and do not need to spend a fortune on basic fishing supplies.

If you start with these basics, you can have a great fishing trip without the need for too many gadgets and equipment that a shop may try to sell you as a beginner. When you do opt for additional items, resist the temptation to purchase more than you need for your skill level and fishing style.

A well set up saltwater aquarium tank is the dream of those who love the hobby. It can be an amazing and striking addition to your home or office and bring you hour of peaceful entertainment.

If you are a beginner, starting with a saltwater aquarium can be a risky business, so I would highly recommend getting the advice of a professional aquarium keeper before setting up your tank. It takes a lot of work and planning to set up the tank just right even before you can begin to introduce fish, corals, and anemones to your new saltwater aquarium.

You will need to monitor the water parameters (temperature, nitrates, ammonia, etc) and some of the aquarium equipment on your saltwater setup. Once a week, or at least once a month, you will need to perform aquarium maintenance on your fish tank, especially water changes and water quality testing. The water in such an aquarium needs to be at the perfect temperature, be at the optimum pH, and have the exact salt content before it is safe for living beings. Salt water fish and other life forms are quite expensive, so it would be wise to have the tank properly set up before you end up with a tank full of sick or dying fish at a high cost.

There are different marine salt mixes in the market and they are all made slightly differently. Unless you’re considering a reef tank, most of the commonly available mixes should serve you fine. You will develop your own salt mix preference after you’ve worked with them for a while.

Prepare and mix your salt water in a special bucket and once you have the perfect mixture you can add the saltwater to your tank. You will have to repeat this process until you have filled the aquarium. If it’s a large tank you can mix the salt in the tank, which can be a bit more difficult and messy.

The lighting on the saltwater aquarium is very important. You need light in the aquarium for at least half a day. Plants and livestock need a perfect cycle of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

A well decorated salt water aquarium will be an asset for years to come, so it’s worth it to spend time and energy looking for the right décor and ornaments for the tank. There are many types of decorations for a saltwater aquarium. Driftwood and sand look simply beautiful and are essential elements of saltwater fish natural habitat.

You can opt for real or plastic plants. However, live plants help you bring Nature into your home. Live plants oxygenate the water in the tank. Keep in mind that your fish will use the decorations you place in the tank as shelter and as playgrounds. So, for the benefit of the fish and to maintain the natural beauty of the aquarium, I would advise to use real aquatic plants.

Live rock is great for your saltwater aquarium. It helps formulate the aquarium’s ecosystem, vital to aquatic life. Live rock is covered with micro and macro organisms which filter the waste products from the water, making it safe for your aquatic inhabitants.

Some saltwater aficionados keep only living corals and anemones in their tanks. This can be colorful and entertaining, at a more relaxed pace. You could keep fish in these tanks, but be aware that some fish view coral and anemones as food. Shrimps, crabs and snails will also eat any anemones you may have.

Anemones look like plants, but they are living creatures that need to be fed, and feeding them by hand can be a lot of fun. You place the food on top of the anemones tentacles and watch them curl themselves around the food and draw it into their mouths.

Before you bring in the inhabitants of your tank, choose the type of fish that you want. The type of fish will also decide the type of plants you use. You also need to research how the type of fish you are interested in will get along with other types of fish. Remember that the dynamics of a saltwater aquarium will be very similar to that in a real coral reef. Don’t mix pray and predators. Do your homework.

Some types of saltwater fish are poisonous, like Lion Fish. They are beautiful to look at and it’s an awesome addition to your tank, but the spines on their fins are very toxic if you get stung. You need to get medical help if this ever happens.

Deciding to have a saltwater aquarium is a lot of work. Keeping your fish and plants healthy will require a commitment on your part and it will be a considerable investment. But if you want to invite Mother Nature into your home environment, there is no better choice. You will enjoy this hobby for years to come.

Winter walleye fishing can be just as exciting as spring, summer and fall walleye fishing. The only difference with winter fishing is that you will need some equipment that you otherwise would not need during the other seasons.

Ice fishing is done when the ice is thick so you will need some basic tools to help you break through the ice to reach the fish. Before you even attempt to break the ice, you want to use a fish locator to locate a school. Your list is going to include some things that you can make your self or buy from a sporting goods store.

Things You Will Need To Survive

Ice drill

Fish locator

Ice shanty (optional)

Portable heater (optional)

Ice pick

Warm clothing

Gloves and Hat

Stool to sit on

Things You Will Need To Fish

Tip ups

Ice fishing rods

Winter bait

Bobber (optional)

The first thing you are going to do is use the fish locator to find the fish. This might be a simple process or it could take a while depending on how well you know the water you will be fishing. Once you find the right location, set up the ice shanty if you are going to have protection from the elements. If you plan to be outside fishing all day or for many days in a roll, the ice shanty is ideal. The heater inside will also help keep you a little warmer so you do not need so many layers of clothing.

Set up the ice shanty and turn on the heater. Get the ice drill ready to make the hole. The hole should be at least six inches in diameter. You can drill more than one hole inside the ice shanty to run two lines if it is large enough with enough walking room. This is the reason that many anglers make their own ice shanties, so that they can make them as big as they will need them. Two holes inside makes it nicer to fish. If you can only get one hole inside, try one hole inside and one outside in view of a window in the shanty that you can view the tip up from easily.

The ice pick is going to be used to remove any jagged edges or make the hole a little bigger. Once the holes are drilled and ready to go, get the fishing gear ready. Set up your stool in front of the hole and set your rod. Use the bait that works the best for cold-water fishing in your area. If you are using artificial bait, you have to make sure that other anglers have had luck in the area with the same bait. Check with others on the ice. Drop the line into the water through the hole and add the tip up. Then do the next hole if you are going to have two rods.

Keep as quiet as possible while ice fishing. The ice is thick but the walleye can feel vibration. You want to attract the fish and not scare them away. There are some possible lures and baits that you might want to keep in your tackle box for ice fishing.

Freshwater fish just like any breathing animals need a certain degree of care and attention. Fish life can be shortened when left unaided or can be extended when properly taken cared of. There are vital factors to properly care and nurture freshwater fish.

Size does matters
Generally when you are starting a brand new hobby of keeping freshwater aquariums at home remember to start with a larger fish tank to accommodate more fish varieties. This is important in making a normal habitat for fish or else they can die of stress when packed in a smaller tank. In larger tanks fish can swim and move freely some would like to stay in a cluster and move around frequently therefore more space is advantageous for a bigger number of fish.

Proper Feeding Routine
Food is vital for fish survival just like any living things. They need to eat food in order to survive inside their artificial marine life environment. There are a number of things to note in terms of fish food. Be cautious of feeding intervals, quantity and quality of food or else they will die of stress and starvation. Feed fish at determined regular intervals; sprinkle enough quantity of fish food to classify fish as to eating patterns just add more food if there is a need to give more.

Fish has different eating patterns some are surface eaters while others are classified as bottom eaters. Feeding the fish can be done by sprinkling desired quantity of fish foods at the surface area. Surface eaters would readily grab the food at once biting every piece of it as fast as they could; tendencies are no more food will reach the bottom. This pattern may risk bottom eaters-type of fish to starvation that’s why it is recommended to separate types of fish according to its classification. Those that can be fed at the surface area can be placed separately from those slow eaters.

Most people who had just started this kind of hobby would tend feed the fish more frequently. They got so fascinated and amazed not realizing on the effects of over feeding their fish. Observe proper feeding at proper time frame, try giving them food that can be easily consumed in 5 minutes during the start up cycle. Observe the water ph level changes, when you note a change in toxicity levels it is best to suspend feeding them up to two days then resume feeding when a dramatic change occurs after.

Balanced Water Chemistry
Determining the Ph levels of your freshwater aquarium is vital part of your fish raising process. PH refers to the acidity and alkalinity of the water that those fishes lived in. It is a must to maintain balanced water chemistry in an artificial marine ecosystem so that fish can freely move in natural like habitat. Constantly monitor the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels of the water and make sure to properly check applied filtration method for water safety use. Water ph levels can be go up or down when you add substrates to the aquarium. Therefore add substrates or materials that can keep its ph at a normal range such as corals, rocks, driftwoods and gravel.
Always have in mind that whatever things you put unto your aquarium may change its water chemistry that’s why it is suggested to check first if it is worth adding for to prevent further negative impact it can give to the whole marine life setting of your fresh water aquarium.

In general taking care of your freshwater aquarium requires basic ideas and concrete implementation of what you have learned from many resources from various information tools like books, internet and personal testimonials. These ideas when concretely done will surely give much advantage to your hobby of keeping a home fish aquarium.

If you are into fly fishing, then definitely you have encountered fishing terms such as artificial fly, wet and dry flies and fly fishing flies. In fact, the term fly fishing will not be without the flies. However, it must be clear that flies, even the artificial ones, can be used for other forms of fishing.

In the game of fly fishing, the main concept is that we try to catch the fish using some form of fly which closely resembles whatever kind of prey your fish is after. In the world of flies and preys, the most popular water insects that are imitates as artificial flies are Stoneflies, Caddis and Mayflies. They are the most commonly imitated insects even during those early times and development of the sport of fly fishing, even up to the modern times.

How are artificial fly fishing flies exactly made?

In the early times, flies that are artificially created are usually made of the combination of feathers, animal hairs or furs; all these three are tied to a fish hook by the early fishermen in order to mimic fish preys, albeit quite crudely. These materials were formed to create imitations of the usual insects and tiny animals (Caddis and Mayflies, as earlier mentioned) and baitfish.

Nowadays, with the modern era of fishing, advanced materials such as synthetics, rubber and mylar are mixed with natural components to produce to highest quality fly fishing flies. The imitation is cunningly so close that even the veteran will be amazed by the resemblance of the fly to the fish prey it mimics. Now there are numerous preys that are being imitated by artificial fly fishing flies such as water and land insects, worms, spawn, small amphibians and reptiles, crustaceans and even birds.

Construction of fly fishing flies

Basically construction of artificial fly fishing flies is done using the method of fly tying. This process involves basic tying tools as well as the components of the fly pattern that are being tied and the pattern to mimic. Fly tying equipment effectively assembles all materials to the fishing hook. Such materials are the common ones like feathers, hooks and furs. When tying flies, natural as well as synthetic components are needed. On the other hand, a fly pattern represents the blueprint needed for fly creation. With a fly pattern, you will know the appropriate size of hooks, the colors, as well as the assembly method.

Looking for a way to bring the while family together? Try saltwater fishing! Saltwater fishing is an activity that everyone, no matter what your age, can enjoy. Many generations can grow closer by fishing together, and this is also a great activity to use to teach children about things like conservation, water safety, and habitats.

Saltwater fishing starts, of course, with a boat. If you don’t have the money to purchase a boat on your own, don’t worry—you can also take part in saltwater fishing trips. Called chartered trips, these fishing trips often include full access to a boat’s fishing equipment, so if your younger anglers don’t own their own rods and tackle, it will be provided. Many of these fishing boats also include cabins, so non-fishermen and women can enjoy a beautiful day at sea. Take along a picnic lunch or even grill up your catch!

Remember when saltwater fishing to teach children the importance of being safe. Of course, there’s always that chance of being jabbed by a hook, but more importantly, saltwater fishing usually requires you to be very far from land. Make sure that everyone is wearing a life jacket when on deck, and it is a good idea to wear whistles in case you fall overboard. Teach children some basic water safety before you leave shore to make sure everyone is safe while saltwater fishing.

You should also teach children the importance of protecting the environment. When your go saltwater fishing, don’t simply do it just for sport—enjoy a fish meal together or give the fish to someone who will. Make sure that your garbage is discarded properly when you reach the shore, not thrown into the ocean. You can also teach your children about how a fish breathes by showing them up close and personal (if you’re lucky!) the gills of a fish.

Saltwater fishing is most enjoyable, of course, when you catch something! Before you leave on your fishing trip, purchase the tackle you’ll need to successfully catch the species you want to catch. Tackle includes a weight, leader, hook, swivel, and bait. There are many saltwater tackle options from which to choose, and it is important to pick the best ones for the saltwater fishing you plan to do.

Bonding with your family is important. While one may easily grow too old for contact sports or not be old enough to understand card games, fishing is the perfect activity that can be enjoyed by all. You should consider saltwater fishing the next time you are looking for a unique family vacation idea.

If Ice fishing is one of your favored activities, it’s quite a smart choice since it doesn’t call for too much fancy gear and tackle stuff and whatever little ice fishing equipment is required, can be easily carried by the sportsperson to the chosen lake in a single trip – sometimes even in a roomy rucksack! Of course, the matter of transporting all the tackle and assorted stuff for an ice fishing adventure becomes all the more easier and lots more fun when you can buy an ice fishing sled to make short work of all this for you! Here’s how to get in the groove of getting one for yourself:

There is no dearth of the various models of ice fishing sleds available in the market today and these come with different price-tags, features and add-ons, which you can choose – depending on your fishing needs and equipment you need to carry. The ice auger and remaining supplies can be easily transported by loading onto the ice fishing sled from your car and taken to the lake; even the soft-bottom roll-up variety serves fishermen well as it takes up less space, is portable and comes in an easy-store case that fits perfectly into the boot of even a small car!

Most ice fishing sleds tend to be flat bottomed, as they are designed on the principle that the entire surface area will contact with ice; however, the conventional variety is equally popular still – the runner kinds! When narrowing down your choices for a good ice fishing sled, remember to do the once-over for the size, storage areas offered you inside the main body and checking to see whether all your fishing gear will fit and move easily enough when placed in it.

The best part about buying an ice fishing sled is that now you can even customize these to suit your preferences for flexi-store areas, load them with soft-sided containers or more solid, durable ones as per your needs! These flexi-soft bins are ideal for holding abnormal shaped fishing gear and are a good bet for carrying your ice auger, fisherman’s tent or winter-shelter option besides little nooks and crannies designed for tackle box, lure cases – even camping stoves!

Thus, we find that first learning about the kind of ice fishing gear you need to take along and the manner in which you intend transporting the sled from your car to the waterway, is most important in deciding the model that will best meet your requirements. Some handy hints for the maintenance of your ice fishing sled include keeping runners and boat-bottom scratch-free, ensuring adequate waxing remains on the runners and avoiding snow and moisture collecting on both these areas – guaranteed to give you optimum service for many years to come!

When you bring home that very first freshwater fish tank I know you are eager to get it up and going. You may be tempted to fill it full of water and add a few fish the first day you get your tank. It would be wise to take a step back and think about a few things before you buy your aquarium.

You need to make some decisions such as how big a tank do I need, and what type of material should it be made of. Decide before you go shopping what type of accessories you will need. The biggest choice for many is to pick out the right type of fish. Get this wrong and nothing else will matter.

This article will look at some of the most important things you need to decide before going out to the pet store to do your shopping.

The most important choice you need to make is how big of a tank do you need. You need to ask yourself how big of a space do I have to put my new aquarium. Also decide on the size fish you intend to keep. Everyone loves those huge fish tanks that the pet stores always seem to have out on the floor but are they the best choice for you. If you are just getting started a small tank may be a much better option as they cost a lot less.

Next you need to decide how much you want to spend. You can get tanks made of glass or acrylic. The acrylic tanks tend to cost more. Either type will do the job so let your budget help you decide what to buy.

The tank is just the first step, as you will need to add all kinds of accessories such as a heater and decorations. You will need gravel and a filter also. These items can add to the cost pretty quick so do your research and know just what you need before you go shopping.

The type of fish you choose will decide everything we have talked about so far. This is the most important decision you have to make. If you decide to keep a pair of Oscars you will need a very big aquarium. On the other hand a few small community fish can get by just fine in a small fish tank.

Do the proper research before hand and you will do fine with that new freshwater aquarium. Enjoy the hobby of fish keeping

Many a good angler has learnt a lot by keeping his eyes and ears peeled during his amateur days of fishing. A lot can be learnt just by observing and listening to the “gurus” talk about a sport or pastime that you are interested in. In the sport of bass fishing many good catches have been the result of a good bass fishing tip from the experts in their field.
Let us take for instance, a sea bass fishing expedition. An amateur will not know that the kid of tackle he is using is not suited for the kind of fish he is trying to lure. An experienced fisherman will tip him on the mistake he is making and this could lead to him making a catch where he would never have been able to without the tip. Something as simple as changing tackle can make a big difference.
Even if you are a seasoned fisherman it pays to keep your mind open to newer ideas and techniques of catching the elusive bass. Remember that people are fishing for bass the world over and all is not known about the mighty bass. The different species of bass feed under different conditions. Trying a technique of luring a sea bass could help you hook a bass in a freshwater lake. It has been known to happen, and these do not occur by fluke, but by anglers trying out newer tips they have learnt from others in the field.
It will only pay to keep abreast with the latest news in he area of fishing. There are newer technologies being developed and newer equipment being placed in the market. If you are aware of the latest equipment you could use, you can perhaps make the most of it with your experience as a bass hunter. Sometimes a bass fishing tip will save you a lot of bother. Yu may be out looking for a spot to fish and come up against a person who has visited a spot where the fish are “biting” as they say. Instead of looking for a sot yourself you have been presented with one through ha tip from another angler who has successfully been fishing those waters.
Reading fishing tips written by the more experienced of fishermen can save you a lot of bother and money too. These tips will enable you to choose the best fishing tackle and lure as well as save you time by educating you on the best spots for you to fish for bass. Fishing tips from the gurus can prevent you making many mistakes and make a success of your favorite pastime.

Lucky Craft Pro Skeet Reese talks about fishing a drop shot as well as how to rig it properly. Studies have been done that have determined that bass have a very sensitive sense of smell and can easily detect unnatural odors. This means that you should use things like odor neutralizing soap to wash your hands and refrain from filling up your vehicle with gas right before hitting the water. Any unnatural odors that are on your hands, will transfer to your bait or lure and cost you bites if the bass smell it.
